What color lens do I need for skiing?

Oakley ski goggles are incredibly popular on the slopes. Many athletes use them or even have their own designs. Popular models such as the Oakley Flight Deck , Oakley Fall Line M and Oakley Line Miner L are known for their excellent fit and innovations. Moreover, all these models come with a wide range of lenses, allowing you to always choose the right lens for the right weather conditions. One lens is ideal for a sunny day with bright light, while another is ideal for cloudy or snowy conditions. Oakley also offers specialized lenses for low-light situations, such as early morning or night skiing. Read this blog to find out exactly which lens you need for which conditions!

The advantages of Oakley Prizm Snow technology are that it's specifically designed to filter certain wavelengths of light, enhancing contrast. This allows you to better see the contours of the snow, such as bumps and icy patches. Other brands often use lens coatings or color filters, but these are generally not as sophisticated as Prizm.

Oakley offers a wide range of lenses with varying light transmission. This means you'll always have a suitable lens for bright sunlight, cloudy days, or even evenings and snowfall. This freedom of choice allows you to perfectly match the lens to the conditions you'll be skiing or snowboarding in.

What lenses does Oakley have?

Extremely sunny (category 4)
Prizm Snow Black has a low light transmission of 5.5%, making it ideal for bright, sunny days. This lens falls into the highest protection category, making it ideal for reducing bright sunlight without sacrificing contrast and visibility.

Sunny (category 3)
Prizm Snow Dark Grey has a relatively low light transmission of 11%, making it suitable for bright, sunny days. This lens falls into category 3, meaning your eyes are well-protected from bright sunlight while still benefiting from enhanced contrast and clear vision.

For skiers and snowboarders who regularly face changing weather conditions – with the sun breaking through the clouds every now and then – the following

Sunny to partly cloudy (category 3)

  •          Prizm Snow Sapphire Iridium,
  •          Prizm Snow Argon Iridium,
  •          Prizm Rose Gold Iridium,
  •          Prizm Sage Gold Iridium
  •          Prizm Snow Torch Iridium.

With a light transmission of approximately 13-17%, they fall into category 3. This means you are well protected against glare in bright light, while in cloudy conditions you still maintain sufficient contrast to clearly see relief and details in the snow.

Partly cloudy (category 2)
Prizm Snow Garnet is suitable for cloudy days. The lens has 19% light transmission, making it ideal for bright to partly cloudy conditions.

Cloudy and bad weather conditions (Category 2)

  •          Prizm Snow Persimmon
  •          Prizm Snow Iced
  •         Prizm Snow HI Pink iridium

There are several lenses suitable for cloudy days and poor weather conditions. These lenses fall into category 2.

Very dark conditions (Category 1)
Prizm Snow Clear has a very high light transmission of 64%, making it ideal for very dark or nighttime conditions. This lens falls into the lowest protection category, allowing you to maintain maximum visibility in low-light conditions.

Combine with a good ski helmet
Whether you're dealing with bright sunlight, cloudy skies, snowfall, or even night skiing, Oakley offers a lens to suit your needs. Thanks to Prizm Snow technology, you'll enjoy clear vision and enhanced contrast at any time of day, making skiing or snowboarding safer and more comfortable.

Besides good goggles, a comfortable and safe ski helmet is essential. Our blog about ski helmets explains everything you need to know when buying one, how to choose the right size, and the latest innovations in protection. A well-fitting helmet with the right goggles not only provides extra safety but also increases comfort and reduces the risk of fogging.
